Analysis
This is reference to the BBC Strictly Come Dancing programme for those not familiar with UK television. The programme is well worth viewing if you like lots of sequins and a tried and trusted format of B class celebrities trying something very difficult and in many some cases achieving amazing results.
And this is why “Strictly” is useful when we are considering analysing any given situation within an organisation or for a client - because it focusses on the ability of individuals.
When you are analysing any businesses situation you need to do the same. If you assume that everyone associated with a project has 100% of the abilities or experience required to deal with the challenge – you are probably making a big mistake.
You are throughout the planning stage advised to make a rational and objective assessment of the individuals who you need to complete any project. Take into consideration all the factors you need to achieve success and ask yourself do the individuals have the ability?
If they do then great, but if not, you need to build into your solution additional resources in order to compensate. The good news is that with a bit of encouragement and good leadership the majority of people rise to the occasion and grow as individuals. Stretch goals are important to get the best of staff now and in the future.
So next time you watch “Strictly” and you see your favourite celebrity struggle and achieve, think about members of your staff who might benefit from a bit of positive development.
