The subject line of your email should be regarded like a headline of an ad. Take time to craft and test different headlines and track response rates. A good place to start is to review the sort of subject lines you have opened from total strangers and ask yourself why?
Here are 5 words that you need to consider:
- You – If you include “You” your emails will be open 5% less than if you don’t. You is a nice touch but try testing if appropriate using their first name to improve personalisation
- Free – There’s a good 10% better open rate if you use the word “Free.” You can suffer from going into spam filters, but you will still get a better open rate
- Quick – Not popular with recipients. Your open rate can fall by 17%. You need to be more specific and give a reason why there is an urgency to your message
- Tomorrow – You get 10% more mail opened if you use this word. Although related to quick it captures recipients interest about what could happen the next day
- NO SUBJECT LINE – Research shows that if you don’t include a subject line your open rate increases by 8%. However this could be because the recipients know the sender – if you don’t it might be considered a bit spam like.
All the above came from a sample size of 6.4 million one to one emails sent from Signals users. Signals is a sales professionals tool to track who is opening and clicking their emails. At the time of writing Signals is a FREE - check it out at Hubspot
PS. Signals also found that 80% fewer emails were sent over the weekend, but those which were sent have a 10% higher chance of being opened
